Define a fair grocery basket
Write down the meals the kit would replace. Build a grocery list for the same number of dinners and servings, using realistic package sizes. Distinguish the amount bought from the amount used in those dinners.
Pantry staples may last across several weeks, while fresh ingredients may not. A single grocery receipt can overstate one dinner’s cost if it includes reusable supplies, or understate it if you ignore items already at home.
Put convenience into concrete terms
List the tasks involved: selecting recipes, checking pantry supplies, shopping, receiving deliveries, cooking, and cleaning. A kit may change some of these tasks without eliminating cooking or cleanup.
Record your own time for an ordinary week. A claimed saving is not useful if the preparation style makes your evenings harder.
Include waste without assuming it disappears
A pre-portioned kit can still go uneaten if you skip a planned dinner. Grocery ingredients can be good value when you reuse them across meals. Track what you discard in both approaches instead of assuming either automatically wins.
If you need an extra side to make a meal work for your household, include that in the cost comparison.
A hybrid routine is a valid result
You do not need one system for every dinner. A few kit meals can sit alongside groceries, leftovers, and meals out. Choose the combination that fits your budget and schedule, and review it when those change.
