1. Count dinners, not aspirations
Choose the number of weeknight dinners you can realistically cook. Leave room for leftovers, meals out, and unpredictable schedules.
2. Read three complete recipes
Look beyond the hero photo. Check the equipment, pantry ingredients, preparation steps, and portions. A familiar main dish can still require more work than expected.
3. Compare the full recurring price
Use the same household size and number of dinners across providers. Include shipping, premium recipes, and optional extras. Compare regular boxes separately from introductory discounts.
4. Check the subscription controls
Find the order deadline and how to skip a delivery before paying. Add the cutoff to your calendar if your schedule changes often.
Use a simple decision worksheet
Create four columns: must-have, nice-to-have, deal-breaker, and unanswered question. Put allergies and essential dietary requirements in the first or third column. Put optional cuisine variety or a preferred cooking style in the second.
Compare actual recipes against this worksheet. Do not give a service credit for a feature you cannot find on the current menu or in the terms. An unanswered question should remain unanswered until the provider clarifies it.
Make the first week a fair trial
Pick dinners you could reasonably imagine cooking again. Avoid choosing every premium recipe in one box if the regular menu is what you plan to use later. Keep the number of servings consistent so you can compare the amount eaten.
Write a short note after each dinner: would we reorder it, what took longer than expected, and what would we change? Those observations will tell you more about household fit than a generic star rating.
