What does a family meal kit really cost?

Worked example: a hypothetical family box

Suppose a box has four servings for three dinners: twelve listed servings. If the food costs $108, shipping is $11, upgrades are $8, and tax is $0, the delivered total is $127. That is $10.58 per listed serving. These are example numbers, not a provider quote.

If two servings go uneaten, the cost per serving actually eaten is $12.70. Counting what your household uses gives a more realistic view of value than dividing only by the advertised serving count.

Compare a month, not only the welcome offer

Write down the promotional total and the regular total in separate rows. Multiply the regular total by the number of deliveries you expect to accept that month. Add any recurring extras you would genuinely buy.

If your grocery comparison includes breakfast and lunch, remove those costs before comparing it with a dinner-only meal kit. If a kit replaces takeout, compare it with the actual takeout bill including delivery fees and tips.
